We visit old burial grounds and select decorative images on the tympanum (upper curved element) of the headstone. We focus on the hard slate stones carved by Boston area carvers, whose etched images remain crisp and clear despite their age. We then make rubbings of the images on tracing paper stretched tightly on the surface of the stone using sticks of graphite. From the rubbing, we create a stencil for use in preparing a printing screen, which we use to hand-print out t-shirts, tote bags, and other items, like cards and fine art prints. Just as the original carvers of these images worked by hand, each step in our process is hand-done.
